Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: The World-Honoured One asked Mañjuśrī, "Why do you not enter through the gate?"
Mañjuśrī said, "I do not see a single phenomenon outside the gate."
The Master said, "The Great Being Mañjuśrī, questioned by old Śākya, was directly led to lose all four directions, seeking the doorway without success, yet said, 'I do not see a single phenomenon outside the gate.' Xuanjue said, 'Are these words inside the gate, or words outside the gate?' Do you all understand? Rewards are not given to scholars of great peace; misfortune does not enter the door of a cautious household."
