Linji asked Huangbo: "What is the clear and authentic meaning of the Buddha Dharma?"
Huangbo struck him. This happened three times.
Linji then took leave of Huangbo and went to see Dayu.
Dayu asked: "Where have you come from?"
Linji said: "I have come from Huangbo."
Dayu said: "What words did Huangbo have?"
Linji said: "Three times I asked about the clear and authentic meaning of the Buddha Dharma, and three times I tasted the stick. I do not know if I was at fault or not."
Dayu said: "Huangbo was so grandmotherly, wearing himself out completely for your sake, and you still come asking whether you were at fault or not!"
Linji was greatly enlightened at these words.
