[The Master] cited: Daci instructed the assembly, saying, "This mountain monk does not know how to answer questions; I merely recognize diseases." At that time a monk came forward; Daci immediately returned to the abbot's quarters. Xuedou said, "Xuedou recognizes diseases and does not answer questions. If a monk should come forward, I would strike him straight across the back." The Master said, "Daci and Xuedou were both adept craftsmen; yet they only looked at what was before their eyes and took no precautions beneath their feet. If a fellow who knows neither good nor bad and asks neither of east nor west should come forth and overturn the meditation seat, even if you possessed the total dynamic and great functioning, I fear you would still have no way to set hand or foot to it. Right at such a time, would you still have eyes that recognize diseases?"
