[The Master] cited: A monk asked Xuefeng, "When Śrāvakas see the nature, it is like seeing the moon by night; when Bodhisattvas see the nature, it is like seeing the sun by day. I wonder, what is it like when the Venerable sees the nature?" Xuefeng struck him three times. Later, [the monk] asked Yantou; Yantou gave him three slaps. Xuedou said, "Applying medicine according to the disease, he struck three times for now. If carried out in accordance with the command, how many blows ought to be struck?" The Master said, "Xuedou was merely being hasty for a time, leading later people often to understand it as carrying out the command. Yet little do they realize that Xuefeng and Yantou were fellows without obstinacy or fixed views."
