[Hongzhi] ascended the hall and brought up: "Caoshan asked Senior Monk De, 'When a bodhisattva is in samādhi and hears a fragrant elephant crossing a river, what sūtra does this come from?' De said, 'The Nirvāṇa Sūtra.' Caoshan said, 'Is it heard before samādhi or after samādhi?' De said, 'The Venerable is flowing.' Caoshan said, 'You have said quite a lot, but you have only said half of it.' De said, 'What does the Venerable say?' Caoshan said, 'Catch it downstream below the rapids.'" The Master said, "The ford of deep silence, the color of gleaming whiteness. Where blended, merits are equal; look closely at how it turns. The Kunlun slave lets go of the golden rope—the nostrils hang down, impossible to reel in."
