[Hongzhi] ascended the hall: "When it is time to go, then go—standing lofty, on what does it rely? When it is time to stop, then stop—broad and open, uniquely spiritual. Undergoing the myriad transformations without seeking merit for oneself; abiding in the one suchness without concealing function for oneself. Therefore Dharma Master Zhao said: 'Restraining the profound mechanism before any omen appears; concealing the dark operation within immediate transformation.' And have you not seen Master the Third Ancestor say: 'The fundamental宗 is not shortened or lengthened; one thought is ten thousand years. Nowhere is it not present; the ten directions are before the eyes.' Worthies of Chan, tell me: how do you practice? Do you understand? Digging a pond does not wait for the moon; / Once the pond is completed, the moon naturally arrives."
