Invited by the head monk, he ascended the hall: "White has no color, yet all colors honor it before them. Water has no flavor, yet all flavors find it supreme. The Way has no root or sprout, yet it pervades heaven and earth. The Dharma has no fixed form, appearing here or there. A valley is always empty, yet its echo answers a call. A mirror is naturally pure, yet its reflections follow every type of thing. When a patch-robed monk truly attains this body and mind, his great function operates freely and cannot be measured as a vessel. Zen worthies, tell me: who is the person who cannot be made into a vessel? Do you still understand?" After a long pause, he said: "Wondrously surpassing the threshold of the first thought, towering aloft before the ten thousand machinations."
