Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "When one holds fast the eye of heaven and earth, continuous and unyielding without leaking the finest thread, how is it?" The Master said: "Clear, it embraces the whale's sea wide; cold, it shines on the toad's orb narrow." The monk proceeded: "The wondrous radiance is not an unfolding illumination, before decorative patterns ever arose." The Master said: "What is the eye with which you see through?" The monk proceeded: "A single speck on the rhinoceros horn penetrates the toad's shadow; through the nine-curved divine pearl, the ant's thread is drawn." The Master said: "You must further shift positions to take up function, engaging sideways in reciprocal interplay before you have it." The monk proceeded: "Just where the jade person beckons with hands, it is further wondrous upon the return road." The Master said: "Just at the time of the return road, what is wondrous?" The monk proceeded: "Everywhere the green willows are suitable for tethering a horse." The Master said: "This is an affair on the way." The monk proceeded: "When not stepping onto the path, how is it functioning?" The Master said: "In straw rain-cape and rush hat, selling fine gold; meeting everywhere, yet none know to call out." The monk bowed. The Master then said: "True emptiness is not empty; wondrous existence does not exist. It is the root of the generation and transformation of all phenomena, the mother of the creation of heaven and earth. Directions cannot fix its dwelling; kalpas cannot exhaust its lifespan. The courtyard is clear and empty—the color of the wind is like autumn. The ground is void and luminous—the splendor of the moon is like broad daylight. Reaching before a single thought sprouts, remain within great merit without guarding it. At the five-way crossroads, the wooden horse neighs; within the four thoroughfares, the stone ox gallops. Met everywhere, everywhere it is him. The entire body is eyes, the entire body is hands."
