The Way is not transmitted by ancestors. Before the ancestors arrived, it encompassed and pervaded, naturally empty and without trace, numinous and without peer. Singly illuminating, it emerges from causes and conditions; constantly alive, it is free of the husk of form. Therefore it is called the ancestor. Only experiential realization accords with it; it cannot be handed over by hand. What Buddhas and Buddhas arrive at takes this as the ultimate. Responsive manifestations divide their bodies—flower by flower, leaf by leaf, faculty by faculty, dust by dust. Wisdom enters the three periods of time; the myriad mechanisms do not disturb me, a single dust does not exclude me. Wondrously emerging from the scrolls of the great chiliocosm, where else could any shadow-affairs be found?
