Abyssal, still, and silent, it thoroughly illuminates the depths of the source. This place is empty yet numinous, vast yet bright. Although there is an image of clearly self-reflecting, there are no shadows or echoes paired with it. When you see through that time, there is still the effort of discerning and carrying burdens; you must take a further step backward before reaching within the circle. Light issues forth from within it, towering and solitary. If you understand borrowing function, it is called 'birth.' These are subtle stirrings of appearing and disappearing, which must be finely and clearly discerned. Once able to divide the body, one can govern affairs. There is a seal that stamps the myriad phenomena, yet this seal leaves no trace. Wandering in the world and confronting conditions, one naturally has the enjoyment of the dust-by-dust samādhi. Its functioning is naturally hollow and cannot be filled: like an empty valley receiving clouds, like a cold stream washing the moon, neither exiting nor residing, remote beyond transformations. If you can further let it be without gain or orientation, in every place, return it to the old ground; not a single hair has ever moved. Limping and stumbling, hundredfold ugly and thousandfold clumsy, naturally harmonious and accordant. Zhaozhou washing his bowl and drinking tea required no arrangement; it was realized from the beginning. If one possesses such an eye and sees through each and every thing, only that is the patch-robed monk's sphere of action.
