復舉記得。古來有兩人尊宿。一人云。我逢人則不出。出則便為人。一人云。我逢人則便出。出則不為人。淨慈借兩人尊宿。作箇擔子。擔在肩上。要令四海五湖衲子遞代相傳也。恁麼擔謂之荷擔佛祖。且道。淨慈只今作麼生。擔來擔去又擔來。撼動風光透九垓。

He brought up again: "I remember an ancient case. In the past there were two venerable elders. One said, 'When I meet someone, I do not emerge; if I emerge, I immediately act for the person.' The other said, 'When I meet someone, I immediately emerge; if I emerge, I do not act for the person.' Jingci borrows these two venerable elders to make a carrying pole, shoulders it, and wants patch-robed monks of the four seas and five lakes to pass it on from generation to generation. Such carrying is called shouldering the Buddhas and Patriarchs. But tell me, how does Jingci act right now? / Carrying it here, carrying it there, and carrying it back again; / Shaking the scene so that it penetrates the nine realms."
