1.87

上堂。涅槃堂裡死功夫。風袞葫蘆水上浮。恁麼點開參學眼。釋迦彌勒是他奴。忽有箇漢出來道。爭似春眠不覺曉。落花處處聞啼鳥。又且如何。拍禪床云。將謂無人。

Ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "Dead effort in the Nirvāṇa Hall— / A wind-rolled gourd floating on the water. / Opening the eye of study in such a way, / Śākya and Maitreya are his slaves. / If suddenly someone should step forth and say, 'How does that compare to: "Sleeping in spring, unaware of dawn, / Everywhere hearing the crying birds amid falling blossoms"?' / What then?" / Striking the meditation bench, he said: "I thought there was no one."
