2.43

淨慈入院。小參大眾。西湖湖裡水。南山山上雲。卓拄杖云。天台拄杖子。相見笑忻忻。時節因緣合談何事。卓拄杖云。喚作拄杖則觸。不喚作拄杖則背。不得有語。不得無語。卓拄杖云。霹靂聲前破款。電光影上發機。這邊那邊逢場作戲。咄。露布葛藤。切忌𡱰沸。還知麼。未曾親近。早隔大千。向上全提。轉無交涉。向者裡。莫有脫窠臼透離微底麼。出來與拄杖子證據。不妨攪動西湖水。撥起南山雲。拄杖子𨁝跳。上三十三天。卓拄杖云。𡎺著帝釋鼻孔。與天下衲僧。出氣慶快叢林。正當恁麼。所謂拄杖子相見底時節因緣。只如未相見已前。又作麼生。卓拄杖云。今夜小參不答話。惱亂春風拄杖頭。

Entering the monastery at Jingci, a minor convocation:
"Great assembly! The water in West Lake;
the clouds on South Mountain."
Striking his staff, he said:
"Tiantai's staff meets with them, smiling joyfully.
As the seasonal conditions harmonize, what matter should be discussed?"
Striking his staff, he said:
"Call it a staff and you collide; do not call it a staff and you turn your back.
You must not have words; you must not lack words."
Striking his staff, he said:
"Before the sound of thunderclaps, the confession is broken;
upon the flash of lightning, the dynamic triggers.
Here and there, acting in accordance with the occasion.
Bah! Trailing preachments and entangling vines—by all means avoid chatter!
Do you still know?
Before getting close, already separated by the great chiliocosm;
bringing forth the ultimate reality upward, all the more without connection.
Right here, is there anyone who breaks out of the nest and penetrates the subtle and infinitesimal?
Come forth and bear witness with the staff!
Do not hesitate to stir up the waters of West Lake
and sweep up the clouds of South Mountain.
The staff leaps up to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven."
Striking his staff, he said:
"Poking Śakra's nostrils,
venting steam for the patch-robed monks under heaven, making the monastery rejoice!
Just at such a time, as for the so-called seasonal conditions of the staff's meeting—
just what about before they met?"
Striking his staff, he said:
"Tonight's minor convocation gives no answer to questions;
the staff's tip vexes the spring breeze."
