Minor convocation on entering the mountain at Tiantong:
“Leaping out of Jingci’s ox pen, barging into Taibai’s horse stable! A ball of sinful karma, pitch black; blown by the wind and scorched by the sun, stinking to high heaven! Seeing it like this, tonight’s minor convocation answers no questions, leading thieves into the realm. Is there anyone entering the realm? Teeth like a sword-tree, mouth like a blood bowl! Lightning and thunderbolts—how exceedingly difficult to continue the lineage! And tell me, how to continue the lineage? Digging a latrine in the Buddha hall, joyfully entering hell! If it is not yet so:
A mangy dog has no wish to be born in heaven,
Instead laughing at the white crane amid the clouds.
To cite: A monk asked Master Qi of this mountain, ‘This student comes towering upright; I request the Master to be clear and precise.’ Qi said, ‘Here I just defecate and finish; what is all this towering and precision?’
Assembly! ‘Just defecate and finish’ is very fine, but the thunder is mighty while there are no raindrops at all. And how should it be?
One blow of the staff overturns it, stripping off the very bottom;
In the great peace without form, singing mountain songs.”
