【九】舉僧問趙州。如何是趙州（河北河南。總說不著。爛泥裏有刺。不在河南。正在河北）州云。東門西門南門北門（開也。相罵饒爾接嘴。相唾饒爾潑水。見成公案。還見麼。便打）。

[9] A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'What is Zhaozhou?' (North of the river, south of the river, all talk fails to reach it. There are thorns in the soft mud. It is not south of the river; it is right north of the river.)
Zhou said, 'East gate, west gate, south gate, north gate.' (Open! If they curse, I permit you to answer; if they spit, I permit you to splash water. A ready-made gong'an. Do you still see it? Immediately strike!)
