【一〇】舉睦州問僧近離甚處（探竿影草）僧便喝（作家禪客。且莫詐明頭也解恁麼去）州云。老僧被汝一喝（陷虎之機。猱人作麼）僧又喝（看取頭角。似則似。是則未是。只恐龍頭蛇尾）州云。三喝四喝後作麼生（逆水之波。未曾有一人出得頭。入那裏去）僧無語（果然摸索不著）州便打云（若使睦州盡令而行。盡大地草木。悉斬為三段）這掠虛頭漢（放過一著。落在第二）。

[10] Case: Muzhou asked a monk: "Where have you recently departed from?" (The probing pole and shadow-grass.) / The monk immediately gave a shout. (An adept Chan guest! Don't feign brilliance and think you can get away with this!) / Muzhou said: "This old monk has been shouted at by you once." (The dynamic of trapping a tiger. Why monkey around with people?) / The monk shouted again. (Look at the horns! Similar it may be; right it is not yet. I only fear a dragon's head and a snake's tail.) / Muzhou said: "After three shouts and four shouts, what then?" (Waves against the current! Not a single person has ever poked their head out. Where will you go?) / The monk had no words. (Sure enough, he cannot grope it out.) / Muzhou struck him and said: (If Muzhou were made to carry out the full imperative, all the grass and trees on the great earth would be cut into three pieces.) / "You fellow who plunders the void!" (Letting go of one move, he fell into the second.)
