10.22

【九五】舉。長慶有時云。寧說阿羅漢有三毒（焦糓不生芽）不說如來有二種語（已是謗釋迦老子了）不道如來無語（猶自顢頇。早是七穿八穴）只是無二種語（周由者也。說什麼第三第四種）保福云。作麼生是如來語（好一拶。道什麼）慶云。聾人爭得聞（望空啟告。七花八裂）保福云。情知爾向第二頭道（爭瞞得明眼人。裂轉鼻孔。何止第二頭）慶云。作麼生是如來語（錯。却較些子）保福云。喫茶去（領。復云。還會麼。蹉過了也）。

[Case 95] Case: Changqing said on occasion: "I would rather say an arhat has the three poisons
(Scorched grain does not sprout.)
than say the Tathāgata has two kinds of speech.
(Already slandering old Śākya.)
I do not say the Tathāgata has no speech,
(Still muddle-headed; already seven penetrations and eight holes.)
only that he has no two kinds of speech."
(Convoluted fellow! What third or fourth kind can you speak of?)
Baofu said, "What is the Tathāgata's speech?"
(A fine interrogation! What does he say?)
Qing said, "How could a deaf person hear it?"
(Crying out toward the empty sky; seven blossoms and eight splits.)
Baofu said, "I knew you were speaking from the secondary level."
(How could you deceive a clear-eyed person? Twisting his nostrils around; how is it merely the secondary level?)
Qing said, "What is the Tathāgata's speech?"
(A mistake. Yet it is a bit better.)
Baofu said, "Go have some tea."
(Understood. He also said: Do you still understand? You missed it!)
