【九八】舉。天平和尚行脚時參西院。常云。莫道會佛法。覓箇舉話人也無（漏逗不少。這漢是則是。爭奈靈龜曳尾）一日西院遙見召云。從漪（鐃鉤搭索了也）平舉頭（著。兩重公案）西院云。錯（也須是鑪裏煅過始得。劈腹剜心。三要印開朱點窄。未容擬議。主賓分）平行三兩步（已是半前落後。這漢泥裏洗土塊）西院又云。錯（劈腹剜心。人皆喚作兩重公案。殊不知似水入水。如金博金）平近前（依前不知落處。展轉摸索不著）西院云。適來這兩錯。是西院錯。是西院錯。是上座錯（前箭猶輕後箭深）平云。從漪錯（錯認馬鞍橋。喚作爺下頷。以恁麼衲僧。打殺千箇萬箇。有什麼罪）西院云。錯（雪上加霜）平休去（錯認定盤星。果然不知落處。軒知爾鼻孔在別人手裏）西院云。且在這裏過夏。待共上座商量這兩錯（西院尋常脊梁硬似鐵。當時何不趕將出去）平當時便行（也似衲僧。似則似。是則未是）後住院謂眾云（貧兒思舊債。也須是點過）我當初行脚時。被業風吹。到思明長老處。連下兩錯。更留我過夏。待共我商量。我不道恁麼時錯。我發足向南方去時。早知道錯了也（爭奈這兩錯何。千錯萬錯。爭奈沒交涉。轉見郎當愁殺人）漪（於宜切水文也）。

[98] Case: When Master Tianping was on itinerant pilgrimage, he called upon Xiyuan. He would often say, "Do not say you understand the Buddhadharma; you cannot even find anyone who can quote a saying!" (No small amount of leaking and stumbling. As for this fellow, right he may be, but what can be done about the sacred tortoise dragging its tail?) / One day, Xiyuan saw him from afar and called out, "Congyi!" (The grappling hook and trailing rope have struck.) / Ping raised his head. (Hit! A double gong'an.) / Xiyuan said, "Wrong!" (He must be forged in the furnace before he can get it. Ripping open the belly and gouging out the heart. When the three essentials and seal open, the vermilion dot is tight. Before allowing deliberation, host and guest are parted.) / Ping walked forward two or three paces. (Already half forward and falling behind. This fellow is washing clods of earth in mud.) / Xiyuan said again, "Wrong!" (Ripping open the belly and gouging out the heart. Everyone calls this a double gong'an; they little know that it is like water entering water, like gold traded for gold.) / Ping came forward. (Still not knowing where it lands as before. Twisting and turning, unable to grasp it.) / Xiyuan said, "These two 'wrongs' just now—was Xiyuan wrong, was Xiyuan wrong, was the elder wrong?" (The first arrow was still light, the second arrow went deep.) / Ping said, "Congyi was wrong." (Mistaking a saddle bridge for his father's jawbone. For patch-robed monks such as this, what crime would there be in beating ten thousand of them to death?) / Xiyuan said, "Wrong!" (Adding frost on top of snow.) / Ping desisted. (Mistaking the zero point on the steelyard. Indeed he did not know where it lands. It is clearly known that your nostrils are in another's hands.) / Xiyuan said, "Stay here for the summer, to wait and deliberate these two 'wrongs' together with you, elder." (Xiyuan's backbone is usually stiff as iron; at that time why did he not drive him out?) / Ping then left immediately. (He resembles a patch-robed monk. Resemble he may, but right he is not yet.) / Later, residing in a monastery, he said to the assembly: (A poor man thinking of old debts. He still had to be checked over.) "When I was on itinerant pilgrimage originally, blown by the wind of karma, I reached the place of Elder Siming. He consecutively uttered two 'wrongs', and further wanted to keep me for the summer to wait and deliberate together with me. I did not say it was wrong at such a time; when I set my feet toward the South, I already knew that it was wrong!" (What can be done about these two 'wrongs'? A thousand wrongs, ten thousand wrongs! What can be done about having no connection? Looking at him more and more, he is completely slovenly, saddening people to death.) / Yi (pronounced yu plus yi; ripples in water).
