"Teacher of a whole nation is also a forced name; / Nanyang alone is permitted to shake with glorious renown." This verse eulogy is just like a portrait encomium. Have you not heard it said: "The ultimate person has no name"? Calling him National Teacher is already forcing a name onto him. The National Teacher's path cannot be compared. Skillfully able to guide people like this, Nanyang alone is acknowledged as an adept. "In the Great Tang, he supported the true Son of Heaven; / He once stepped upon Vairocana's head and walked." If one has the eyes and brain of a patch-robed monk who possesses the eye, one must walk upon Vairocana's head; only then can one see this Tamer of Tenfold Bodies. What the Buddha called a Tamer is precisely one among the ten epithets. One body transforms into ten bodies, ten bodies transform into a hundred bodies, and so on up to thousands of millions of bodies—in the main it is just one body. This verse is relatively easy to explain. The verse that follows eulogizes his words: "Do not mistake your own pure Dharma body." The eulogy is so watertight that not a drop of water can splash through; it is truly difficult to open one's mouth to explain. "An iron hammer smashes the golden bones." This eulogizes "Do not mistake your own pure Dharma body." Xuedou praises him exceedingly. The golden bones are smashed to pieces with a single hammer blow. "What else is there between heaven and earth?" It must simply be stripped naked and bare, without a single thing remaining to be grasped; this is the scenery of the original ground. It is just like: "Over three thousand oceans of realms, the night is deep and still." In the oceans of fragrant waters of the trichiliocosm, there are boundless realms, and every realm has an ocean. Just when the night is quiet and the watch is deep, heaven and earth are at once clear and limpid. Tell me, what is this? By all means do not understand it as closing your eyes and shutting your lids. If you understand it like that, you fall straight into a sea of poison. "I know not who enters the dark dragon's cave." Extending the legs, drawing back the legs—tell me, who is it? Everyone's nostrils have all at once been pierced through by Xuedou!
