10.6

犀牛扇子用多時。問著元來總不知。人人有箇犀牛扇子。十二時中。全得他力。為什麼問著總不知去著。侍者投子。乃至保福。亦總不知。且道雪竇還知麼。不見無著訪文殊。喫茶次。文殊舉起玻璃盞子云。南方還有這箇麼。著云。無殊云。尋常用什麼喫茶。著無語。若知得這箇公案落處。便知得犀牛扇子有無限清風。亦見犀牛頭角崢嶸。四箇老漢恁麼道。如朝雲暮雨一去難追。雪竇復云。若要清風再復頭角重生。請禪客各下一轉語。問云。扇子既破。還我犀牛兒來。時有一禪客出云。大眾參堂去。這僧奪得主家權柄。道得也殺道。只道得八成。若要十成。便與掀倒禪床。爾且道。這僧會犀牛兒不會。若不會却解恁麼道。若會雪竇因何不肯伊。為什麼道。拋鉤釣鯤鯨。只釣得箇蝦䗫。且道畢竟作麼生。諸人無事。試拈掇看。

"The rhinoceros-horn fan has been used for a long time; when asked about it, originally none know at all." Everyone has a rhinoceros-horn fan, and throughout the twelve periods of the day they completely derive strength from it. Why is it that when asked about it, they do not know its whereabouts at all? The attendant, Touzi, and even Baofu also did not know at all. Now tell me, did Xuedou know? Have you not seen: when Wuzhuo visited Mañjuśrī, while drinking tea, Mañjuśrī held up a glass bowl and asked, "Is there also this in the South?" Wuzhuo said, "No." Mañjuśrī said, "What do you usually drink tea with?" Wuzhuo was speechless. If you know where this gong'an lands, you will know that the rhinoceros-horn fan has boundless pure breeze and will also see the rhinoceros's head and horns towering high. What those four old fellows said was like morning clouds and evening rain, once gone, hard to pursue. Xuedou also said, "If you want the pure breeze to return and head and horns to be reborn, I ask the Chan guests each to offer a turning phrase." He asked, "Since the fan is broken, bring me back the rhinoceros!" At that time a Chan guest came forward and said, "Great assembly, go to the hall to participate!" This monk seized the master's authority; what he said was spoken very well, yet he only said eighty percent. If he wanted one hundred percent, he should have immediately overturned the Chan seat. Tell me, did this monk understand the rhinoceros or not? If he did not understand, yet he could speak like that. If he understood, why did Xuedou not approve of him? Why did he say, "I cast a hook to fish for a leviathan or whale, but only caught a frog"? In the end, how is it? When you all have nothing to do, try to bring it up and examine it.
