10.63

圜悟老師。在成都時。予與諸人請益其說。師後住夾山道林。復為學徒扣之。凡三提宗綱。語雖不同。其旨一也。門人掇而錄之。既二十年矣。師未甞過而問焉。流傳四方。或致踳駁。諸方且因其言以其道不能尋繹之。而妄有改作。則此書遂廢矣。學者幸諦其傳焉。

When the old teacher Yuanwu was in Chengdu, I and others asked for instruction on his teachings. Later, when the Master resided at Jiashan and Daolin, students questioned him again. In all, he raised the essentials of the lineage three times; although the words were not the same, their intent was one. His disciples gathered and recorded them, and twenty years have already passed. The Master never reviewed or inspected them. As they circulated in all directions, some discrepancies may have arisen. If people in various quarters, unable to trace and unravel the Way through his words, should make arbitrary alterations, this book would then be abandoned. May students carefully examine this transmission!
