圓悟老祖居夾山時。集成此書。欲天下後世知有佛祖玄奧。豈小補哉。老妙喜深患學者不根於道溺于知解。由是毀之。謂其父子之間矛盾。可乎。今嵎中張居士重為板行。果何謂哉。覽者宜自擇焉。大德壬寅中秋。住天童第七世法孫比丘。淨日拜手謹書。

When the ancestral master, Old Yuanwu, dwelt at Jiashan, he compiled this book, wishing to let later generations throughout the realm know that there are the profound mysteries of the Buddhas and patriarchs. How could it be considered of slight assistance? Old Miaoxi was deeply concerned that students were not rooted in the Way and were drowning in intellectual understanding; on that account he destroyed it. Can one say that there was a contradiction between this father and son? Now Layman Zhang of Yuzhong has carved the blocks and printed it anew. Truly, what does this mean? Let those who read it choose for themselves. Mid-autumn of the renyin year of Dade [1302]. Respectfully written with bowed head by the bhikṣu Jingri, dharma-grandson of the seventh generation residing at Tiantong.
