Chan Master Yuanwu offered critical commentary on the one hundred verse eulogies on antiquity by Venerable Xuedou, resolving the mysterious and subtle, laying bare the deep and abstruse, revealing the dynamic functions of the successive patriarchs, and opening the mind-source of subsequent students. Moreover, his wondrous wisdom was purely concentrated, his divine dynamic function operated in secret; the blazing sun shone, fully illuminating the mysterious gateway; the full moon arose, clearly brightening the dark chamber. How could one of shallow understanding ever attain to such ultimate heights? Later, Chan Master Dahui, when a student entered his room and spoke quite unusually, doubted it; barely testing and examining him, the student's erroneous sharp dynamic faltered on its own. Upon being interrogated again, he confessed and surrendered himself, saying, "I memorized it from the Biyan ji; truly, I have had no awakening." Because [Dahui] worried that later people would fail to understand the root and solely prize words to pursue glibness of tongue, he consigned it to fire to remedy this defect. Yet compiling this book and burning this book proceeded from one and the same intent; how could there be two? Zhang Mingyuan of Yuzhong by chance obtained the latter fascicle of a manuscript, and also obtained the block-print edition of Xuetang as well as a Sichuan edition. Collating the errors and corruptions, he carved and printed this book to circulate it for ten thousand ages, so that people of superior capacity and great wisdom may, at a single glance, suddenly open to their original mind and directly reach the realm of no doubt. How could this be called of slight assistance? On the day of the Assembly Welcoming the Buddha, the dingsi year of Yanyou [1317]. Reverently written as an afterword by the bhikṣu Youling, abbot of Jingshan.
