4.22

【三五】舉。文殊問無著。近離什麼處（不可不借問。也有這箇消息）無著云。南方（草窠裏出頭。何必擔向眉毛上。大方無外。為什麼却有南方）殊云。南方佛法。如何住持（若問別人則禍生。猶掛唇齒在）著云。末法比丘。少奉戒律（實頭人難得）殊云。多少眾（當時便與一喝。一拶拶倒了也）著云。或三百或五百（盡是野狐精。果然漏逗）無著問文殊。此間如何住持（拶著。便回轉鎗頭來也）殊云。凡聖同居龍蛇混雜（敗缺不少。直得脚忙手亂）著云。多少眾（還我話頭來。也不得放過）殊云。前三三後三三（顛言倒語。且道是多少。千手大悲數不足）。

[Case 35] Case: Mañjuśrī asked Wuzhuo, 'Where have you recently departed from?' (One cannot fail to ask. There is also this news.) / Wuzhuo said, 'The South.' (Poking his head out of a clump of grass. Why carry it on your eyebrows? The Great Square has no exterior; why then is there a South?) / Mañjuśrī said, 'How is the Buddha Dharma maintained in the South?' (If he asked someone else, disaster would arise. Still hanging on the lips and teeth.) / Wuzhuo said, 'Monks of the saddharma-vipralopa mostly observe the precepts and Vinaya but little.' (A truthful person is hard to find.) / Mañjuśrī said, 'How large are the assemblies?' (At that moment I would have given him a shout. Pressed down with a single squeeze.) / Wuzhuo said, 'Sometimes three hundred, sometimes five hundred.' (All are wild fox spirits. Indeed, a leakage!) / Wuzhuo asked Mañjuśrī, 'How is it maintained here?' (Being pressed, he turns his spearhead around.) / Mañjuśrī said, 'Ordinary and sacred dwell together; dragons and snakes are mixed.' (Many flaws and lapses. Truly makes hands and feet flustered.) / Wuzhuo said, 'How large is the assembly?' (Give me back the topic. He too cannot let it pass.) / Mañjuśrī said, 'The front three-three and the back three-three.' (Topsy-turvy words. Tell me, how many is that? Even the Great Compassionate One with a Thousand Hands cannot count them.)
