Xuedou watched the banquet to give the commands, moved the strings to distinguish the tune, evaluating it phrase by phrase. This verse does not differ from the pattern of picking up antiquity. At “A flower-medicinal hedge,” he immediately says, “Do not be muddled.” People all say Yunmen answered at random, all understanding him through conceptual interpretations; therefore Xuedou provided the fundamental fodder, straightaway saying, “Do not be muddled.” For Yunmen’s meaning did not lie in the flower-medicinal hedge. Therefore Xuedou said, “The stars are on the steelyard, not on the pan.” This line leaks far too much. In the water there is originally no moon; the moon is in the blue sky—just as the stars are on the steelyard, not on the pan. Tell me: which is the steelyard? If you can clearly discern it, you will not disappoint Xuedou. When the ancients arrived here, there was no harm in being compassionate: they clearly told you, “It is not here, go over to that side.” Tell me: what place is that side? This finishes versifying the opening phrase. Later, versifying the monk saying, “What about when going along just like this?” Xuedou said, “This monk is also far too reckless.” Tell me: is this fitting together in the light or in the dark? Did he speak like this having understood, or did he speak like this without understanding? “A golden-haired lion: let everyone look!” Do you still see the golden-haired lion? Blind!
