"Hit with snowballs! Hit with snowballs! Layman Pang's mechanisms cannot be grasped." Xuedou wanted to walk upon the layman's head. The ancients used snow to clarify matters on the side of one color. Xuedou's meaning was: if at that time he had taken a snowball and hit him, even if the layman had whatever mechanisms, he would still have found it difficult to engage. Xuedou boasted of where he hit, completely unaware that there was a flaw. "In heaven and among humans, he does not know himself; / In the eyes and in the ears, utterly free and unconstrained." In the eyes it is snow; in the ears it is also snow. He is abiding right on the side of one color. This is also called the realm of Samantabhadra, matters on the side of one color; it is also called "becoming one whole piece." Yunmen said: "Even if the entire universe and great earth have not the slightest flaw, this is still a turning phrase; not seeing a single color is only half the presentation. If you want the full presentation, you must know there is a road beyond." Arriving here, the great function must appear before you; a needle cannot prick in, and one does not listen to another's judgment. Therefore it is said: "He investigates living phrases, he does not investigate dead phrases." An ancient said: "A single fitting phrase is an ass-tethering stake for ten thousand kalpas." What use is it? Having versified this to death, Xuedou again turns the dynamic mechanism, saying: just this utter freedom and unconstraint—even if it were the blue-eyed barbarian monk, he too would find it difficult to discern. If even the blue-eyed barbarian monk finds it difficult to discern, what more would you have this mountain monk say?
