“In the empty hall, the sound of raindrops; even an adept finds it hard to reply.” If you call it the sound of rain, that is deluding oneself to chase after objects; if you do not call it the sound of rain, how can you turn objects around? Arriving here, no matter how much of an adept one is, it is hard to reply. Therefore the ancients said: “One whose view is equal to the master's diminishes the master's virtue by half; only one whose view surpasses the master's is worthy of transmission.” Also, Nanyuan said: “Under the staff is the forbearance of the unarisen; when facing dynamic functioning, do not yield to the master.” “If one says he has entered the flow, as before he still does not understand.” The teachings say: “Initially within hearing, entering the flow and forgetting what is heard; what is entered being tranquil, the two characteristics of motion and stillness clearly do not arise.” If you say it is the sound of raindrops, it is not; if you say it is not the sound of raindrops, it is not either. The earlier verse, “Two shouts and three shouts, the adept knows dynamic transformation,” is of this very type. If you say it is entering the flow of sights and sounds, it is not; if you call it sights and sounds, as before you do not understand his intent. It is like pointing at the moon with a finger—the moon is not the finger. Whether understanding or not understanding, “south mountain, north mountain, torrential downpours.”
