Xuedou is skilled at bringing forth eyes where there are no seams or cracks, eulogizing in verse to bring people to see. Yunmen said, "The six do not take it in." Why did Xuedou instead say: "One, two, three, four, five, six. Even the blue-eyed foreign monk cannot count them all"? Therefore it is said: "The old barbarian is only allowed to know; the old barbarian is not allowed to understand." One must leave it to the descendants of his house before it will do. Just now it was said: each word and phrase responds to the season and accords with the moment; if you can penetrate through, only then will you know it is not in words and phrases. If perhaps you have not, you inevitably form conceptual interpretations. The old master Wuzu said: "Śākyamuni Buddha is a lowly hired hand; the cypress tree in front of the courtyard: one, two, three, four, five." If you can see clearly and precisely under Yunmen's words, you will soon arrive at this realm. "At Shaolin, they vainly speak of handing it to Shenguang": the Second Patriarch was initially named Shenguang. Coming down to later times, they again spoke of his returning to India. Bodhidharma was buried at the foot of Mount Xiong'er. At that time, Song Yun, on an official diplomatic mission returning from the west, met Bodhidharma on the Western Ridge carrying a single shoe in his hand, returning to the Western Heavens. When the envoy returned and reported to the emperor, they opened the tomb and saw only a single shoe left behind. Xuedou says: In truth, regarding this matter, how was it transmitted? Since there was no transmission, "Rolling up his robes, he again spoke of returning to India." And tell me, why did this land then have two or three, transmitting it on in such a manner? Here there is indeed confusion; one must also comprehend it before one can enter into mastery. "India is vast and boundless, with nowhere to seek him; last night he returned to lodge facing Ru Peak." And tell me: right now, where is he? The Master then struck, saying, "Blind!"
