"The golden fish that has passed through the net; / Cease saying it lingers in stagnant water!" Wuzu said that with this single line the verse was completed. Since it is a golden fish that has passed through the net, how could it reside in stagnant water? It must dwell where vast billows are boundless and white waves surge to the heavens. Tell me, throughout the twelve periods of the day, what does it take for food? All of you, try to settle it under the three rafters and before the seven-foot mat! Xuedou said: "This matter is brought up according to one's capacity. When something like the golden fish stirs its gills and tosses its tail, it directly causes heaven and earth to shake." "A thousand-foot whale spouts, and vast waves surge"—this versifies Sansheng saying: "A kalyāṇamitra of fifteen hundred people, yet you do not even recognize a turning phrase!" It is like a whale spouting vast waves. "A clap of thunder roars, and a pure gale arises" versifies Xuefeng saying: "This old monk's tasks as abbot are many." It is like a clap of thunder roaring and a pure gale arising. In general, it versifies that both of them were experts. "A pure gale arises: / Between heaven and the world of men, how many know?" Tell me, where does this phrase land? "Gale" (biāo) means wind. When the pure gale arises, between heaven and the world of men, how many people can know it?
