6.21

【五五】舉。道吾與漸源至一家弔慰。源拍棺云。生邪死邪（道什麼。好不惺惺。這漢猶在兩頭）吾云。生也不道。死也不道（龍吟霧起。虎嘯風生。買㡌相頭。老婆心切）源云。為什麼不道（蹉過了也。果然錯會）吾云。不道不道（惡水驀頭澆。前箭猶輕後箭深）回至中路（太惺惺）源云。和尚快與某甲道。若不道。打和尚去也（却較些子。罕逢穿耳客。多遇刻舟人。似這般不唧𠺕漢。入地獄如箭）吾云。打即任打。道即不道（再三須重事。就身打劫。這老漢滿身泥水。初心不改）源便打（好打且道。打他作什麼。屈棒元來有人喫在）後道吾遷化。源到石霜舉似前話（知而故犯。不知是不是。是則也大奇）霜云。生也不道。死也不道（可殺新鮮。這般茶飯却元來有人喫）源云。為什麼不道（語雖一般。意無兩種。且道與前來問是同是別）霜云。不道不道（天上天下。曹溪波浪如相似。無限平人被陸沈）源於言下有省（瞎漢。且莫瞞山僧好）源一日將鍬子。於法堂上。從東過西。從西過東（也是死中得活。好與先師出氣。莫問他。且看這漢一場懡㦬）霜云。作什麼（隨後婁藪也）源云。覓先師靈骨（喪車背後懸藥袋。悔不慎當初。爾道什麼）霜云。洪波浩渺白浪滔天。覓什麼先師靈骨（也須還他作家始得。成群作隊作什麼）雪竇著語云。蒼天蒼天（太遲生。賊過後張弓。好與一坑埋却）源云。正好著力（且道落在什麼處。先師曾向爾道什麼。這漢從頭到尾。直至如今。出身不得）太原孚云。先師靈骨猶在（大眾見麼。閃電相似。是什麼破草鞋。猶較些子）。

[Case 55] Case: Daowu and Jianyuan arrived at a family's home to offer condolences. Yuan patted the coffin and said, "Is it alive or dead?" (What are you saying? So un-awake! This fellow is still caught between the two extremes.)
Wu said, "I won't say alive, and I won't say dead." (A dragon chants and mists arise; a tiger roars and winds spring up. Measuring the head to buy a hat. A heart of grandmotherly kindness.)
Yuan said, "Why won't you say?" (Blundered past it. Indeed, a mistaken understanding.)
Wu said, "I won't say! I won't say!" (Foul water poured right over his head. The first arrow was still light, but the second arrow went deep.)
On the way back (Too wide awake),
Yuan said, "Preceptor, tell me quickly! If you don't tell me, I will strike you, Preceptor!" (Now getting a little bit somewhere. Rarely encountering an ear-pierced foreigner; mostly meeting people carving marks on a boat. Such an un-clever fellow enters hell as swift as an arrow.)
Wu said, "Strike me if you will, but as for telling, I won't say!" (Again and again one must treat the matter with gravity. Plundering on his very body. This old fellow is covered in mud and water; his initial mind remains unchanged.)
Yuan then struck him. (A good strike! But tell me, why did he strike him? A wrongful beating, after all, found someone to take it.)
Later, when Daowu passed away, Yuan went to Shishuang and recounted the previous conversation. (Knowingly committing an offense. Who knows whether it is right or not? If it is right, that too is extraordinary.)
Shishuang said, "I won't say alive, and I won't say dead." (Exceedingly fresh! Such fare has indeed found someone to eat it.)
Yuan said, "Why won't you say?" (Though the words are the same, the intention is not twofold. But tell me, is it the same as or different from his previous questioning?)
Shishuang said, "I won't say! I won't say!" (Above heaven and below heaven. The waves of Caoxi seem similar. Countless ordinary people have been drowned on dry land.)
Yuan had an awakening upon these words. (Blind fellow! Don't try to deceive this mountain monk!)
One day, Yuan took a spade into the Dharma Hall, pacing from east to west and from west to east. (This too is finding life within death. Good to vent spleen on behalf of the late master! Don't ask him; just watch this fellow make a total fool of himself.)
Shishuang said, "What are you doing?" (Following behind with entangling clutter.)
Yuan said, "I am looking for the holy relics of the late master." (Hanging a medicine bag behind the hearse. Regretting not being cautious at the beginning. What are you saying?)
Shishuang said, "Vast billows billowing, white waves surging to the heavens—what holy relics of the late master are you looking for?" (One must grant him to be an adept to understand this. What are you doing flocking in crowds?)
Xuedou added the remark: "Blue heavens! Blue heavens!" (Too late! Drawing the bow after the thief has passed. It would be good to bury them all in one pit.)
Yuan said, "Just the right time to apply effort!" (And tell me, where does this land? What did the late master once say to you? This fellow, from beginning to end right up to now, cannot make his escape.)
Taiyuan Fu said, "The late master's holy relics are still present!" (Does the great assembly see? Like a flash of lightning! What kind of broken straw sandal is this? Still, it gets a little bit closer.)
