趙州道。曾有人問我。直得五年分疎不下。似象王嚬呻獅子哮吼。無味之談。塞斷人口。南北東西。烏飛兔走。雪竇若無末後句。何處更有雪竇來。既是烏飛兔走。且道趙州雪竇山僧畢竟落在什麼處。

Zhaozhou said: "Once someone asked me; it straightaway took five years without being able to explain it away." It is like the elephant king yawning and stretching, like the lion roaring. Flavorless talk plugs mouths shut. South, north, east, west: the crow flies, the hare runs. If Xuedou did not have this final phrase, where would Xuedou come from? Since the crow flies and the hare runs, tell me, in the end where do Zhaozhou, Xuedou, and this mountain monk fall?
