"For a patch-robed monk who has settled his business, one is enough." Tell me, what business has he settled? An adept Chan guest, as soon as he hears it brought up, picks it up and goes. For such a patch-robed monk, only one is needed; what use is there in gathering in flocks and herds? "On the long continuous bench he stretches his legs and lies down." An ancient said, "Clearly there is no Dharma to awaken to; once awakened, it deludes people instead. Stretching out both legs to sleep, there is neither false nor true." Therefore inside his chest there is not a single matter; when hungry he eats rice, when tired he sleeps. Xuedou's meaning is: if you say that entering the bath you awakened to wondrous touch being manifested with clarity, in the part of this kind of patch-robed monk with nothing to do, it is merely like speaking of a dream within a dream. Therefore he says, "In a dream he once spoke of awakening to perfect penetration; washed with fragrant water, foul spit directly in his face!" For such as this, it is merely foul water poured straight over the head; what further perfect penetration are you talking about? Xuedou says that for this sort of fellow, it is just right to spit right in his face. This mountain monk says: another layer of mud added to earth.
