"Touzi, Touzi! The wheel of his dynamic function encounters no obstruction." Touzi habitually said: "You all say Touzi is honest. If you suddenly take three steps down the mountain and someone asks you, 'What is Touzi's honest place?' how will you reply?" An ancient said: "Where the wheel of dynamic function turns, even an adept is bewildered." His wheel of dynamic function spins smoothly without any obstruction at all. Therefore Xuedou says, "Letting go of one, he catches two." Have you not seen a monk ask, "What is the Buddha?" Touzi said, "Buddha." He asked again, "What is the Way?" Touzi said, "The Way." He asked again, "What is Chan?" Touzi said, "Chan." He also asked, "What about before the moon is full?" Touzi said, "Swallow three or four." "What about after it is full?" "Spit out seven or eight." In receiving people, Touzi constantly used this dynamic function. Replying to this monk, it was merely the single word "It is." This monk was struck twice, which is why Xuedou says, "The same over there, the same right here." Four lines eulogize Touzi all at once. At the end, he eulogizes this monk, saying: "Pitiable are the countless tide-players." This monk dared to snatch the flag and seize the drum, saying, "The venerable monk shouldn't fart and make the sound of a boiling bowl," and saying again, "Can I call the venerable monk a donkey?" This is precisely where he plays with the tide. This monk exhausted all his tricks, but as before he died within Touzi's words. Touzi struck him at once; this monk is precisely "In the end they fall into the tide and die." Xuedou brings out this monk: "If they should suddenly come alive," he would overturn the meditation seat, and Touzi would have to retreat three thousand miles. It would truly cause "The hundred rivers to flow backward with a roaring surge." Not only would the meditation seat tremble, but mountains and rivers would rear up precariously, and heaven and earth would turn pitch-dark. If indeed everyone were like this, this mountain monk would beat the retreat drum; where would you all settle your body and establish your life? Jiyue (glossed with fanqie ni-ji and ni-ge, meaning steep and craggy).
