Case: When Baizhang went up to the hall, there was always an old man who listened to the Dharma and dispersed with the assembly. (Taking quiet amid the noise.) One day he did not leave. (He has always been suspicious of this fellow.) Zhang then asked, "Who is the person standing there?" (Things cannot be ended easily; when a guest arrives, he must be received.) The old man said, "In the time of the past Kāśyapa Buddha, I once resided on this mountain. (Originally an insider.) A student asked, 'Does a person of great cultivation still fall into cause and effect or not?' (Just do good deeds; do not ask about the path ahead.) I answered him, 'He does not fall into cause and effect,' (One matching phrase becomes a hitching post for donkeys for myriad kalpas.) and I fell into the body of a wild fox for five hundred lifetimes. (You say 'not falling into cause and effect'?) Now I ask the Venerable to give a turning word in my place." (What is the purpose of this?) Zhang said, "He is not blind to cause and effect." (Buried in a single pit.) The old man attained great awakening at these words. (The fox spittle is still there.)
