師云。黃梅密付。二十年。南北紛爭。臨際明傳。至今有人不薦。這般手段。直得鯤鵬變化。海嶽夷平。大溈秀云。古者忍死待來。因何正法眼藏。却向瞎驢邊滅却。臨際行計速速。三聖又却怱怱。因斯父子情忘。遂使後人失望。若不得流水。還應過別山。本錄三聖便禮拜。未當好心。臨際乃付偈曰。㳂流不止問如何。真照無邊說似他。離相離名人不稟。吹毛用了急須磨。偈畢儼然而逝。此公案天童拈到恰好處便休。三聖禮拜。臨際說偈。大有放過輕捨處。還有與古人出氣底麼。險。

The Master said: Huangmei's secret transmission brought twenty years of contention between north and south. Linji's clear transmission remains unappreciated by some even today. Such capability directly causes the giant roe and peng to transform, and seas and mountains to be leveled. Daguan Xiu said: "The ancients held back death awaiting their successors; why then was the treasury of the eye of the true Dharma destroyed by a blind donkey? Linji's departure plan was hasty, and Sansheng was also in a rush. Because of this, affection between father and son was forgotten, thereby causing later people to lose hope. If you do not encounter flowing water, you must cross to another mountain." In the original record, Sansheng then made a prostration; this was not done out of goodwill. Linji then bestowed a verse: 'Flowing along the stream without ceasing, you ask how it is; / Boundless true illumination, I speak of it to you. / Free from marks and names, people do not receive it; / Once the hair-blown sword is used, it must be sharpened at once.' The verse finished, he passed away with dignity. Tiantong brought up this case to the exact point and then stopped. Sansheng bowed, and Linji spoke the verse; there is much letting go and brushing aside there. Is there anyone who can vent steam on behalf of the ancient? Perilous!
