師云。師資合道。父子投機。溈仰家風千古龜鑑。溈山問仰山。甚處來。溈山豈不知仰山田中來。垂此一問。要與仰山相見。仰山不負來問。只道箇田中來。且道。還有佛法道理也。無溈山深入虎穴。更問田中多少人。仰山插鍬子叉手而立。便衲僧相見。玄沙云。我當時若見。便與踏倒鍬子。萬松道。忍俊不禁。投子青禪師頌云。溈山問處少知音。插地酬他佛祖沈。踏倒玄沙傍不肯。免教蒼翠帶春深。萬松道。草枯鷹眼疾。南嶽法輪。平禪師頌云。狹路相逢避不及。插下鍬時叉手立。過得橋來岸上行。始覺渾身泥水濕。萬松道。不堪迴首月明中。二老宿頌處。只有千尺寒松。更看。天童放出抽條石笋。頌云。

The Master said: Teacher and disciple match the Way; father and son harmonize their dynamics. The lineage style of Gui and Yang is a model for a thousand ages. Guishan asked Yangshan, "Where have you come from?" How could Guishan not have known that Yangshan came from the fields? Lowering this single question, he wanted to meet with Yangshan. Yangshan did not fail the incoming question; he merely said, "From the fields." Tell me: is there any principle of the Buddha Dharma here or not? Guishan went deep into the tiger's cave and further asked, "How many people were in the fields?" Yangshan thrust down the hoe and stood with hands folded: this was patched-robed monks meeting each other. Xuansha said, "If I had seen him at that time, I would have kicked over the hoe for him." Wansong says: He could not hold himself back. Chan Master Touzi Qing's verse says: 'Guishan's question found few who understood the tune; / Thrusting it into the ground, he answered him with buddhas and patriarchs sinking. / Kicking it over, Xuansha beside him would not approve, / Spared from letting deep spring tinge the azure green.' Wansong says: When the grass withers, the eagle's eye is sharp. Chan Master Ping of Nanyue Falin's verse says: 'Meeting on a narrow path, there is no avoiding; / Thrusting down the hoe, he stands with hands folded. / Having crossed the bridge, he walks upon the bank; / Only then does he realize his whole body is soaked in mud and water.' Wansong says: One cannot bear to look back under the bright moon. In the verses of the two elder masters, there was only the thousand-foot cold pine; look further at Tiantong bringing out the sprouting bamboo shoot of stone. The verse says:
