The Master said: The various quarters say that the fan had a rhinoceros painted on it playing with the moon, or that it was made of rhinoceros horn, or that rhinoceros horn was used for the handle; all could be called a "rhinoceros fan." At that time, Yanguan opened up a shop, and each person brought out a fan; only Zifu personally crafted a new design, entirely distinctive. / The Master once instructed the assembly, saying: "Seeing Zifu's flagpole across the river and then turning back, one deserves thirty blows under the heels; how much more so coming across the river!" At that time a monk had just come forward; the Master said, "Not worth speaking with." / In general, lecture halls value speaking up to it, while the ancestral gate values applying it. Thus the character inside the circle has the greatest pedigree. / Xuansha instructed the assembly, saying: "I have the treasury of the true Dharma eye, which I entrust to Mahākāśyapa; it is like painting the moon. Caoxi raising the whisk is like pointing at the moon." The "cassia disc" is the moon. In the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, the Bhagavān radiated the "moon-beloved light," cooling King Ajātaśatru's burning afflictions. Therefore it is said: "Who knows that the cassia disc's thousand-year spirit / Wonderfully makes a single speck of autumn penetratingly bright?" One could say: when the great handle is in one's hand, the cool breeze always touches the body. / Remarks and verses on the rhinoceros-horn fan are most numerous, yet indeed none have ever met Yanguan face to face. If Wansong had been the attendant and heard, "Bring me the rhinoceros-horn fan," whether made of feathers, cattail, paper, bamboo, damask, silk, or palm fiber, I would just reach out my hand and hand him one. Why? Though there be a thousand kinds of cleverness, in the end there are not two kinds of wind.
