The Master raised this: A monk asked Yun'an, 'The *Treatise on the Avataṃsaka* says that the defilement of the entrenchment of ignorance is itself the unmoving wisdom of all buddhas. The principle is extremely profound and mysterious, exceedingly difficult to comprehend.' An said, 'This is most clear and very easy to understand.' Just then there was an attendant boy who was sweeping. An called to him, and he turned his head. An pointed and said, 'Is this not the unmoving wisdom?' Yangshan calling the monk and his turning his head was precisely this moment. Yun'an then asked, 'What is your buddha-nature?' The boy looked left and right, and departed bewildered. An said, 'Is this not the defilement of entrenchment? If you can understand it, you become a buddha right now.' The boy's bewilderment is no different from hesitation; the defilement of the entrenchment of ignorance is also the same as vast and boundless karmic consciousness. Yun'an and Yangshan tested monks and examined people in exactly this manner. Wansong's view, however, is not so: through and through, both the boy and the monk are the unmoving wisdom; from the very beginning, both Yun'an and the peak of Yang are vast and boundless karmic consciousness. If someone can distinguish this, they will have intimately seen Tiantong. The verse says:
