3.30

舉。溈山問仰山。忽有人。問一切眾生但有業識茫茫無本可據。子作麼生驗（馬是官馬不須印）仰云。若有僧來即召云。某甲（腦後一椎不知來處）僧迴首（頂門上去却三魂）乃云。是甚麼（趁爐竈熱更與一下）待伊擬議（脚板底鑽了七魄）向道。非唯業識茫茫。亦乃無本可據（生擒活捉）溈云。善哉（苦口出親言）。

Case: Guishan asked Yangshan, 'If someone suddenly asked, "All sentient beings only have vast and boundless karmic consciousness with no foundation to rely upon," how would you test him?' (The horse is an official horse; no brand is needed.) / Yang said, 'If a monk comes, I would call out, "So-and-so!"' (A blow behind the brain; he knows not whence it comes.) / The monk turns his head. (From the crown of his head, the three ethereal souls depart.) / Yang then says, 'What is it?' (While the furnace is hot, strike him once more.) / Waiting for him to hesitate, (Beneath the soles of his feet, the seven corporeal souls are pierced.) / I would say to him, 'Not only is your karmic consciousness vast and boundless, you also have no foundation to rely upon.' (Captured alive and taken in the flesh.) / Gui said, 'Excellent!' (Bitter words from the mouth are words of intimacy.)
