3.73

舉。僧問興陽剖和尚。娑竭出海乾坤靜。覿面相呈事若何（披鱗曲鱔帶角泥鰌）師云。妙翅鳥王當宇宙。箇中誰是出頭人（展翅崩騰六合雲搏風鼓蕩四溟水）僧云。忽遇出頭時。又作麼生（許爾破膽）陽云。似鶻捉鳩。君不覺。御樓前驗始知真（好勸不聽）僧云。恁麼則叉手當胸退身三步（更待第二鎚）陽云。須彌座下烏龜子。莫待重教點額痕（再犯不容）。

Case: A monk asked Venerable Po of Xingyang, "When Sāgara emerges from the ocean, heaven and earth are quiet. When meeting face to face, what is the affair?" (Scaled earthworms, horned mud-loaches.) / The Master said, "When the garuda king dominates the universe, who in there is the one sticking out his head?" (Spreading wings, surging clouds across the six directions; beating wind, churning waters of the four seas.) / The monk said, "If he suddenly encounters the moment of sticking out his head, then what?" (I grant your gall is broken.) / Xingyang said, "Like a falcon catching a dove, you do not notice; verified before the imperial tower, only then is it known to be genuine." (Good advice not heeded.) / The monk said, "In that case, I fold my hands over my chest and take three steps back." (Still waiting for a second hammer-blow.) / Xingyang said, "Little black tortoise beneath Mount Sumeru's throne, do not wait for another red dot on your forehead." (A second transgression will not be tolerated.)
