The Master said: Chan Master Qingpo of Mount Xingyang in Yingzhou succeeded Dayang Ming'an. There were fifteen people in all, every one of whom passed away prematurely; later, through Yuanjian of Fushan, Venerable Touzi Qing was obtained. Xingyang was one of the fifteen, and elder brother to Master Qing. The place of this monk's question is like Raudrākṣa and Śāriputra competing for victory when establishing Anāthapiṇḍada's park. Raudrākṣa manifested a ferocious dragon wishing to harm Śāriputra; Śāriputra manifested a garuda bird, tore it apart and ate it. A dragon is also the chief of scaled creatures; yet how can it help that the garuda feeds only on dragons? *Sāgara* is Sanskrit, here meaning 'ocean'. Lord Pingyuan, Zhao Sheng, ministered to King Huiwen and King Xiaocheng of Zhao; his house built a multistoried tower overlooking commoners' homes. Among the commoners was a cripple; a beauty [of Zhao Sheng's household] laughed at him. The cripple asked for the beauty's head; the Lord promised it but did not carry it out. Half the guests left. The Lord executed a prisoner instead of her; the guests still did not come. Thereupon he severed the beauty's head and hung it before the imperial tower to verify its genuineness. After a full year, the guests gathered. This style of the Dong school does not value personally delivering sticks and shouts; it requires relying on the side to convey the message. This monk's crime was not doubly charged, and only then could he dodge and weave. Do you know? A whip of rushes to show shame is all the harder to transgress; drawing a circle on the ground as a prison, one cannot bear to deceive it. Official law is like a furnace, the mind like iron; Tiantong from here on expends drill and hammer. The verse says:
