舉。僧問法眼。承教有言。從無住本立一切法。如何是無住本（合取狗口）眼云。形興未質（莫眼華）名起未名（畢竟喚作甚麼）。

A monk asked Fayan, 'In accordance with the teachings it is said: "From the root of non-abiding all phenomena are established." What is the root of non-abiding?' (Shut that dog's mouth!)
Fayan said, 'Before forms arise into substance; (Don't let your eyes play tricks.)
Before names spring into names.' (Ultimately what do you call it?)
