舉僧問法眼。承教有言。從無住本立一切法。如何是無住本。眼云。形興未質名起未名。頌曰。
A monk asked Fayan: "Receiving the teaching, it is said: 'From the non-abiding root, all phenomena are established.' What is the non-abiding root?"
Fayan said: "Form arises before taking substance; name emerges before being named."
