The Master said: Yunmen entered the hall and said, 'The moment a single word is raised, a thousand differences run on the same track; encompassing the finest dust is still talk of the teaching gate. If it is a patchrobed monk, what should he do? If you take the Patriarch's meaning and the Buddha's meaning to deliberate here, the Caoxi road sinks into level ground. Is there still anyone who can speak? Speak and come forth!' A monk asked, 'What is talk that transcends the buddhas and surpasses the patriarchs?' Yunmen said, 'A sesame cake.' The monk said, 'What connection does this have?' The Master said, 'Indeed, what connection does it have?' Then [Yunmen] said, 'Do not take this as an understanding! Seeing someone speak of the ancestral master's meaning, you immediately ask about the principle of talk that transcends the buddhas and surpasses the patriarchs. For now, what do you call "buddha"? What do you call "patriarch", that you speak of talk that transcends the buddhas and surpasses the patriarchs? Then you ask about leaving the three realms—bring the three realms forth! What seeing, hearing, awareness, or knowing obstructs you? What phenomena of sound and form are there for you to settle? What dish are you settling?' Another monk asked, 'What is talk that transcends the buddhas and surpasses the patriarchs?' Yunmen said, 'Ephedra from Puzhou, aconite from Yizhou.' He also said, 'Come, come! Let me ask you all further: carrying your staff horizontally across your shoulder, you say, "I study Chan and learn the Way, seeking the principle of transcending the buddhas and surpassing the patriarchs." Let me ask you: throughout the twelve periods of the day, walking, standing, sitting, lying down, defecating, and urinating, down to the bugs in the thatched ditch and on the butcher's block selling mutton in the marketplace—is there still the principle of transcending the buddhas and surpassing the patriarchs?' Foguo said, 'Some draw a circle, adding mud to earth, adding cangues and locks.' Wansong says: If you want the chisel and hammer that smash the cangue and break the lock, ask Tiantong's verse on the old case. The verse says:
