師云。福州玄沙宗一大師。諱師備。芒鞋布衲菲食自怡。雪峯高其苦行。常以備頭陀呼之。世傳。玄沙不出嶺。保壽不渡河。因蹶傷足指。歎曰。是身非有。痛自何來。是身是苦。畢竟無生休休。達磨不來東土。二祖不往西天。遂迴復因閱楞嚴而發明。故應機捷敏與修多羅合。至與雪峯徵詰亦當仁不讓。峯曰。備頭陀再來人也。閩帥王審知。令公王延彬。皆以師禮之。眾常八九百。沙到蒲田縣。百戲迎之。次日問小塘長老。昨日許多喧鬧向甚處去也。小塘提起袈裟角。也不妨緊峭。第一不得向喧靜昨日今朝處著眼。蹉過當陽一段大事。小塘不費心力。信手拈起袈裟。沙云。𩕐挑沒交涉。小塘甚處是沒交涉處。玄沙是許不許。大溈喆云。大溈即不然。或有問。但鳴指一下。如有箇衲子出來。云𩕐挑沒交涉。却肯他。何故大丈夫漢。捋虎鬚也是本分。且道。利害在甚麼處。又云。小塘懷藏至寶。遇別者以增輝。玄沙本分鉆鎚一擊。乃光流千古。法眼別云。昨日有多少喧鬧。法燈云。今日更好笑。看他二尊宿是當派下兒孫。覰破玄沙用底。一向寬遮外羅却就裏。暗箭相射。天童具通方眼。見伊家長裏短。徹底頌出。頌云。

The Master said: Great Master Zongyi of Xuansha in Fuzhou had the taboo name Shibei. In straw sandals and cloth robes, he delighted himself with meager food. Xuefeng held his ascetic practices in high regard and always called him Ascetic Bei. It is handed down in the world that "Xuansha did not go beyond the mountain pass, and Baoshou did not cross the river." Because he stumbled and injured his toe, he sighed, saying: "This body is not existent; whence does the pain come? This body is suffering; in the end it is unproduced—give it up, give it up! Bodhidharma did not come to the eastern land, and the Second Patriarch did not go to the western heavens." Thereupon he turned back. Later, due to reading the *Śūraṅgama-sūtra*, he had a breakthrough; hence, responding to the dynamic, he was nimble and in accord with the sūtras. Even when cross-examining Xuefeng, he did not yield what is proper to do. Xuefeng said, "Ascetic Bei is a person who has returned." The Fujian Military Commissioner Wang Shenzhi and Prime Minister Wang Yanbin both treated him with the etiquette of a teacher. His assembly was constantly eight to nine hundred. Xuansha went to Putian County, and a hundred entertainments welcomed him. The next day he asked Elder Xiaotang, "Where did all that clamour of yesterday go?" Xiaotang lifted up a corner of his kāṣāya. This too was suitably sharp and brisk. Above all, you must not fix your eye on clamour and quiet, yesterday and today, thereby missing the one great matter right before you. Xiaotang did not expend mind or strength, lifting the kāṣāya as his hand naturally took it. Xuansha said, "Deeply dangling, no relation!" Where is Xiaotang's lack of relation? Did Xuansha approve or not approve? Dagui Zhe said: "Dagui would not do so. If someone asked, I would just snap my fingers once. If there were a patchrobed monk who came out and said, 'Deeply dangling, no relation,' I would then approve of him. Why? A great fellow stroking a tiger's whiskers is also his fundamental share. And tell me, where does the advantage and disadvantage lie?" He also said, "Xiaotang harboured a supreme jewel; meeting an appraiser, its brilliance increased. Xuansha struck a blow with the fundamental hammer, and its light flows for a thousand ages." Fayan said instead, "How much clamour was there yesterday?" Fadeng said, "Today is even more laughable!" See how these two venerable elders are descendants of the same lineage; having seen through what Xuansha used, all along broadly screening off the outside, they drew close within and shot arrows at each other in secret. Tiantong possesses the eye that penetrates in all directions; seeing the family's strengths and weaknesses, he versifies it completely. The verse says:
