6.43

師云。大陽道。直道。不出門亦是草漫漫地。天童便道草漫漫。門裏門外君自看。恰似說話不作意游戲其間。出門是草。人皆易知。亦易迴互。不出門亦是草。人難知難轉身。所以道。平地上死人無數。過得荊棘林。是好手。天童道。荊棘林中下脚却易。平淨地上不出門庭。夜明簾外轉身甚難。是須各自著眼。無人替代。又云。幾何般。延聖四般。萬松五般。點檢將來不出末後兩句。要識天童掌後處麼。虎瘦雄心在。人貧志氣存。

The Master said: Dayang said, "I would say directly: even without stepping out the door, grass is everywhere overflowing." Tiantong then said, "Grass overflows everywhere; inside the gate, outside the gate, see for yourself." It is just like speaking without intentionality, sporting and playing therein. That stepping out the door is grass is easy for everyone to know, and also easy to turn around. That even without stepping out the door is grass is difficult for people to know and difficult to turn around. Therefore it is said, "On level ground, countless people die; one who can pass through the thicket of brambles is a master hand." Tiantong said that in a thicket of brambles, placing one's feet is rather easy; on flat and clean ground, not stepping out of the courtyard, outside the luminous night screen, turning one's body is very difficult. This requires each person to keep their eyes open; no one can take your place. He also said, "How many kinds?" Yansheng had four kinds; Wansong has five kinds. Examining them, they do not go beyond the final two lines. Do you wish to know the place where Tiantong holds the palm? Though the tiger is gaunt, its heroic mind remains; though the person is poor, his resolve and spirit endure.
