潭州溈山靈祐禪師。二十三歲參百丈大智。充典座二十年。因撥火悟道。後與華林。賭淨瓶下語。贏得溈山。連帥李景讓。奏號同慶寺。相國裴休。甞咨玄奧。師甞見野火問道吾。還見火麼。吾曰。見。山云。從何處起。吾曰。除去行住坐臥。請師別致一問來。山休去。佛鑑拈云。炎炎野火。人人皆見。獨有道吾。見得逈別。萬松道。一等是看病。不似道吾覻透心肝五臟。溈山通方便。相席打令道。道得也與他沒交涉。唯有天童道。沒交涉處。正好道。頌云。

Chan Master Lingyou of Guishan in Tanzhou went to study under Baizhang Dazhi at age twenty-three and served as chief cook for twenty years. Upon poking the fire, he awakened to the Way. Later, in answering about the pure vase in a contest against Hualin, he won Mount Gui. The Regional Military Commissioner Li Jingrang petitioned that the temple be named Tongqing-si. Chancellor Pei Xiu once inquired into its profound mysteries. The Master once saw a wildfire and asked Daowu, "Do you see the fire?" Wu said, "I see it." Shan said, "From where did it arise?" Wu said, "Setting aside walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, please pose another question, Master." Shan stopped. Fojian raised this and said, "Everyone sees the blazing wildfire; only Daowu saw it completely differently." Wansong says: Equally visiting the sick, none is like Daowu who saw right through the heart, liver, and five viscera. Guishan opened a skillful means, following the table to call the toasts, and said, "Even if you could speak, it would have no connection with him." Only Tiantong said, "The place where there is no connection is precisely the time to speak." The verse says:
