The Master said: Tiantong says that through one aperture being open and clear, all eight directions are latticed and luminous. Consider, for instance, a willow-lined pond, a flower-covered bank, the warm sun, and the gentle breeze: where is spring? What shape and form does it take? Yet it is able to respond to things and take advantage of the season without lingering or obstruction, just like the moon in the sky revolving at will. Know, then: who is it that, 'throughout the body' and 'all over the body', reaches behind the back to feel for the pillow? Inside the puppet booth, there must be someone pulling the strings. The Śūraṅgama[-sūtra] speaks of eighty-four thousand pure, precious eyes, eighty-four thousand mudrā arms, and eighty-four thousand vajra heads. Xinghua's verse upon falling from a horse and breaking his arm says: 'The Bodhisattva of Great Compassion has a thousand hands; / What real man does not have them?' Now tell me: which are the hands and eyes of the entire body? The Master pulled his eyes open with his hands and said: 'Meow!'
