The Master said: "A monk asked National Teacher Zhong, 'What is the great meaning of the Buddhadharma?' The Master said, 'Ten thousand bodhisattvas in the Hall of Mañjuśrī.' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' The Master said, 'The thousand hands and eyes of Great Compassion.' Fujian's verse says: 'This year vegetables are cheap, / Radish heads cover the ground; / One copper coin buys one, / Those who get them are stuffed full.' Here one sees Tiantong and Yunmen lending a single hand, lifting up the broken-legged cauldron. The 'Appended Phrases' of the *Zhouyi* says: 'The way of the gentleman: whether coming forth or staying put, whether silent or speaking; when two people are of one heart, their sharpness can cut metal; words from one heart have a fragrance like an orchid.' The commentary says: 'Metal is a hard and unyielding substance, yet it can be cut—this speaks of extreme sharpness.' The *Mao Shi* poem 'Cedar Boat' says: 'My heart is not a stone, it cannot be rolled; my heart is not a mat, it cannot be rolled up.' The commentary says: 'Though a stone is hard, it can still be rolled; though a mat is level, it can still be rolled up; this expresses that one's own determination and evenness exceed stones and mats.' Tell me: National Teacher Zhong, Fujian, Yunmen, Tiantong—why were they so flustered? Honest hearts in pieces are known by few; facing them in heaps, those who behold are rare."
