When Master Guishan was first in Baizhang's assembly, he served as the cook. Baizhang, wishing to choose a master for Mount Dagui, invited the head monk and [Guishan] to utter words before the assembly; whoever was extraordinary could go. Baizhang then picked up a pure pitcher, placed it on the ground, and posed the question: "You must not call it a pure pitcher. What do you call it?" The head monk then said, "It cannot be called a wooden stump." Baizhang then asked Guishan. Guishan promptly kicked over the pure pitcher and walked away. Baizhang laughed and said, "The head monk has lost Mount Dagui!" He thereupon appointed him as the founding abbot.
